Introduction for potential authors of chlamydiae.com.

Chlamydiae.com offers authors a highly visible shopwindow on chlamydiae, chlamydial research and related health-care issues. A meeting place for chlamydial enthusiasts to work on common topics of interest, the site also provides a means whereby newer members of the chlamydia research community can get themselves known. A wiki site analogous to Wikipedia, the web pages of chlamydiae.com are designed to be readily updateable using any simple web browser, providing an informal, transparent way for you to publish and exchange your ideas with others over the web. However, unlike conventional wiki sites, high quality is facilitated by restricting authorship to established or upcoming members of the chlamydial research and health-care communities. Run by enthusiasts as a non profit-making website, the reasoning is that relatively few persons working together within a simple collaborative framework can create a comprehensive, readily updated web encyclopaedia on chlamydiae of real interest to the wider scientific, health-care and grant-awarding community.

How do I become a chlamydiae.com author?

Established chlamydiaologists are liable to be invited to contribute by one of the WebMasters or SectionLeaders , but this is inevitably an inefficient process and we apologise if we have not yet got around to you. The prime requirement is that you should be a genuine and informed member of the chlamydial community. If so, please contact us, in the first place, by emailing Mail Dr Sander Ouburg. Tell us about your chlamydial interests / research, where and with whom you work, which topic or webpage you would like to author, any papers that you have published recently and your contact details. If you are not already known, we will informally check your application is bona fide. This should not take long but, to safeguard the quality of the site, we reserve sole discretion as to whether to grant or reject a webauthorship request. If a section leader has been apppointed for the relevant topic, we will also forward your email to that person. The registration process will be performed by web adminstration, who will consult you on your preferred wikiname.

What are the responsibilities of authors?

In essence these are the normal responsibilities of publication in an academic journal. The authorship of individual articles is identified by the author's wikiname. All materials on this site, including copyright, are the property and, ultimately the responsibility, of the contributing authors. Authors are responsible for ensuring that any copyrighted material used is cleared by the copyright holders for publication on this site. Arguments and factual statements must be referenced with appropriate literature citations. Controversial views are welcome provided that they are non-abusive and are supported by cogent argument and citations.

What's in a TWiki?

Once your web authorship has been registered, you need to get to grips with Twiki, which is the collaboration platform we use.

The following links will provide you with a simple overview and tutorial on Twiki. It shouldn't take more than an hour or so. There is a dummy sandbox web where you can try out what you have learned. Web authoring uses a simple WYSIWYG web editor that operates within your usual web browser. Once you have the hang of that, you are also likely to find the Raw edit facility useful, see WikiSyntax. It is not essential to know html code, though it may occasionally be useful!

Start here!

  • Browse. This is a site like other sites. Read and follow interesting links.
  • Write. Speak your mind! From your browser you can change or add to anything you see in a TWiki topic, the Sandbox, or a web to which you have editing rights. Use regular text or TWikiShorthand.
  • Experiment. Edit your personal page or visit the Sandbox web.
  • Organize. You can learn to use Twiki Forms and Formatted Searches to include topic information - for example, classify pages by subject, status, or date.
  • WelcomeGuest - look here first
  • TWikiTutorial - a simple 20 minutes TWiki tutorial
  • TWikiShorthand - a simple introduction to TWiki mark up language (TML) a simple and reliable editor for creating Twiki web pages

Some basics

Editing a page:

There are two web editors available. The Sandbox is an excellent place to try them out. Just follow the 20 minute Twiki Tutorial.

In brief, the WYSIWYG editor (default) is accessed by clicking the Edit button at the top or bottom of each page or by double clicking on a red hyperlinked wiki stub to create a new wiki page. This editor is easy to use but has some irritating bugs. Its menu includes an HTML tab, which enables you to edit raw html code. The alternative TML editor, accessed by clicking the Raw Edit button at the bottom of each page, uses Twiki mark up language. This editor is also very easy to use and is reliable. You need to know how to use both editors, since each has its advantages and disadvantages.

WYSIWYG editor:

  • click Edit at the bottom of any topic and make your changes using the WYSIWYG editor
  • mouse-over the menus to see what they do
  • click [ Quick save ] at the bottom to save and view your changes without forcing a new version.
  • click [ Save Changes ] to save your document as a new revision.

TML editor

  • click Raw Edit at the bottom of any topic and follow the Twiki shorthand rules to make your changes
  • click [ Quick save ] at the bottom to save and view your changes without forcing a new version.
  • click [ Save Changes ] to save your document as a new revision.

Creating a page

A WikiWord consists of two or more words run together, each with an initial capital letter. To create a new topic (web page) just type a new WikiWord. Double clicking on the new word will take you straight into the WYSIWYG editor to create the new page.

Info If you haven't yet created a new page for that WikiWord, the hypertext link will appear red to remind you. Don't worry! You create the page at YOUR convenience!

Viewing the history of a topic

Click History at the bottom of a topic

Attaching files

Click Attach to upload and attach any type of file.

  • Open the Powerpoint presentation that you wish to upload
  • Click the Office button top left.
  • Choose save as .... powerpoint 2007 presentation
  • In the dialogue box choose the name of the presentation
  • Choose to save as .... a single file web page, *.mht or *.mhtml
  • Choose a directory of your choice on your computer, change the title if you need to, then [Save]
  • Browse to the relevant web page on chlamydiae.com
  • Click Attach , browse to and select the previously saved single web page
  • Select check box [attach link to file] if you want a hyperlink in the web page that you can cut and paste to the relevant place
  • Click [upload file] and the job is done. Easy-peasy!
